Let’s see whats under the bathroom sink.
Just so you know: This post contains affiliate links. All of these are products I have personally used and would genuinely recommend.
My parents house has three bathrooms, each with a different sink cabinet. Obviously that means the under sink space in each bathroom is also different. My mom asked me to help her organize the under sinks of the primary bathroom.
What kinds of things go under the bathroom sink? I find that the answer to this question varies depending on what other storage spaces can be found in the house. For example, in our one bedroom one bathroom apartment we currently keep laundry detergent under the bathroom sink but in our previous house we kept it in the laundry room.
There is nothing I enjoy more than a good organizing solution, however usually that is the last part of an organizing project. With this project my mother had already purchased the organizing supplies before we started so I was a little bit worried they wouldn’t work for our purposes.
The primary bathroom has a double sink with two under sink cabinet doors and three drawers. The drawers are used for medications, toilet paper, and soap. They weren’t in need of organization so we didn’t touch those.
Before we organized it there were plenty of expired products. Remnants of previous organizing solutions were still in the space but not functional for this purpose.
Underneath my mother’s sink she keeps mostly her hair products and other personal items. She had “borrowed” some multi purpose bins for a different room to hold some of her hair brushes other items. These bins are one of my favorites and I have used them many times. However, they were not functional in this space. When I asked my mom what kind of organization she prefers, she told me seeing the items makes it more likely she will use them. So we went with two metal drawers, one in the small size and one in the large, for the hair dryer and brushes. On the other side a plastic pull out shelving unit makes it easy to place items with the top being smaller which allows for taller items to go on the bottom.
There is plenty of space under the sink for more products. Everything is easy to see and contained.
My dad’s under sink area is interesting because the majority of the items are cleaning products. My parents find it easier to keep cleaning products in each bathroom so they don’t have to be moving them all over the house, especially as one of the bathrooms in downstairs and two are upstairs.
Cleaning products and a few personal items are kept on this side of the sink. Without any organization it was hard to find anything.
We used similar pull out shelves which easily contained the cleaning products and the personal items he keeps. In this instance we used two of the same shelves on either side. Putting the shelves together was easy (even if we forgot that one has to be the mirror image of the other).
While the organizing product used on this side of the sink is similar, it is a bit more specific for the needs of this cabinet.
As you can see in the photos, we did remove certain items from boxes to make them more convenient to store. This is a good tip when space is limited because easy access equals more usual friendly.
Finally I told my mom not to be afraid of empty space. Just because we didn’t fill up the drawer with the blow dryer in it does not mean something else should go there. Having a larger drawer than the item will allow my mom to easily remove the dryer and put it back once she is done without having to consider any additional items.
What do you keep under your sink? How do you organize it?
Until next time
