I spill things. I need an apron.

I have been seeing a very cool apron online that doesn’t have the traditional silhouette of two ribbons that tie in the back. After looking online for the name of this type of apron, I finally stumbled on a variety of cross back aprons.

I saw a few affordable options online but was not convinced by the review, the fabrics or the prints (in some case all three were no good for me). Then I saw the Hedley & Bennett Crossback smock and fell in love. Then I saw the price and decided it wasn’t happening. The next best thing was to make it myself.

Just to give you a little background, I have been sewing since I was very young. My grandmother used to work in a clothing manufacturing plant and routinely made clothing for me when when I was a child. She taught my mom how to sew, who taught me and here we are.

The machine I am currently using actually used to belong to my mother (don’t worry she has a newer one). It is a brother from the early 90s and while I have tried using new machines, still haven’t found one that I like as much.

In our previous house, I had a craft room with some great organization options for my fabric stash, but since then my stash has been moved to a storage unit. So I went to Joann Fabrics and picked out a fabric. The one I went with was a yellow window pane canvas cotton which felt durable but still cute. (Note: It is no longer available but this one is the same material in another great print)

I liked this fabric so much, I bought it twice a year apart.

I search for a sewing pattern and found this one from the website Hey June. I can’t continue with this post without mentioning how much I love the website Hey June. They have tons of patterns, many are free. You can print the pattern at home which makes it simple to make adjustments. If you like sewing, do yourself a favor and visit this site.

I printed out the pattern, cut it to the correct size and placed it over my prepared fabric.

The only issue I have had is that I made this apron when I was pregnant and now it is a bit too big for me.

A few days after making this I had the opportunity to grab my fabric stash out of storage and realized I had previously purchased this same fabric, I guess this means I really like it. I also found another canvas cotton in a floral pattern and made another apron for my mother.
